PRESIDENTS MESSAGE March Newsletter
Hello again Ikes members. Spring weather is March normal....., warm and sunny, cold and windy, snow or rain... just take your pick. Perhaps these conditions could happen in just one week or within one day!
Overcome. Improvise and Adapt. For our sky bound eyeballs, do watch for Snow geese flights. They are moving now along with many species of
ducks. A sure sign spring is on the way. Wild turkeys are on the mind of many of us. It will not be long before that season beckons us to explore spring forests.
At our next Izaak Walton League board meeting for March 11th at the Grimes Farm Conservation Center, the
following topics (and others no doubt) will be discussed. Here are some of my thoughts.... in no particular order.
SCHOLARSHIP applications review: On March 31st, those candidates applying will have sent in their request for review. Therefore, sometime after March 31st and preferably before our April 8th meeting, I would like to gather about 3 or 4 volunteers to open, read and consider for recommendation a list of those deemed quantifying for our 2026 awards. That list can then be summarized and presented to the Ikes board of directors on April 8th, 2026. Notifications will then be sent as soon after as possible.
SPRING WORK DAY : Set a date in April for any spring cleaning, opening of facilities and needed grounds work to get the area up and running for 2026. Work items may include any of the busy work or even special
tasks on a list of "things to do." Examples could be trails opening, tree cutting off trails, cut trees and brush off the dam backslope, treating stumps with herbicide, bridges put in place over Timber Creek, etc. We will also discuss storage space options, perhaps the purchase of a steel shipping container, (or other options). The idea is to create more space inside the current shed by dedicating another area for sporting clay
apparatus/supplies.
Our 2026 proposed schedule for clay bird shoots and other known activities for Uncle Ike’s kids programs can
be reviewed. And we will hear about the recent Gun Show event and the responses it had from those who attended.
